John was born and raised in Vietnam, moving to America in his late teen years where he started playing poker with his family and friends. He moved on to playing in low-limit ring games at a local casino and eventually moved to Los Angeles where he became a casino dealer. Dealing the cards and continuing to play the game off the clock, John was able to notch his belt with even more experience and he finally decided that his passion would become his career.
John now resides in Long Beach, California and is known as John ‘The Razor' Phan. He has gained recognition across the globe as one of the world's most imposing tournament players. John's claim to fame began back in 2004 when he won two events at the 5th Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open. Knowledge of John's expertise continued to spread when he went on to win the $3,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em event at the Festa al Lago II.
John's 2004 success was only the beginning. In 2005 he took the $2,425 No-Limit Hold ‘em event at the Los Angeles Poker Classic and walked away with more than $300,000. Then in 2006, John finished as runner-up in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em event at the 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic.
And, in 2008, John had his most impressive year ever when he won not one, but two World Series of Poker bracelets, boosting his career tournament earnings to more than $5.3 million. He won his first bracelet in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em event, taking $430,000 in prize money and then finished first in the $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw event, leaving the table with over $150,000 and earning his second bracelet.
But it did not stop there! John also found himself at the final table at the World Poker Tour $15,000 No-Limit Hold'em event held at the Bellagio Cup IV and then later won the 2008 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker $9.5K No-Limit Hold ‘em Main Event, where he was awarded over $1 million in prize money! This run of extraordinary success paved the way for John to be awarded the 2008 Player of the Year awards from Card Player Magazine as well as Bluff Magazine!
Beyond the world of poker, John works enthusiastically for charities and travels to his home country, Vietnam, to help the less fortunate several times annually.
