Jeff Madsen Takes Down Borgata Winter Poker Open
Full Tilt Poker pro Jeff Madsen walked away from the poker tables with $625,000 for his victory in the 2010 Borgata Winter Poker Open, bringing his career tournament earnings to over $3 million. This prestigious annual event held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, began with a playing field of 766 who competed for a prize pool of over $2.5 million, after paying their $3,500 Main Event buy-in.
Madsen bested them all by taking the chip lead with only seven players still seated at the final table and remained the action dominator for the duration of the event. After taking out four of the last six remaining players in the game, he found himself almost even in chips going into the heads-up match. But that did not stop Madsen, who wore his opponent down over time and ended up taking a 2-to-1 chip lead. In the final hand, Madsen’s K-10 held up against his opponents Q-2 and sweet victory was achieved.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Madsen attended the University of California in Santa Barbara, where as a member of the Pacific Palisades High Dolphins his earliest big sporting victory was when the team won the City Invitational Baseball Championship at Dodger Stadium.
Madsen is the second famous poker player to come out of Pacific Palisades High School, with the first being fellow Team Full Tilt member Chris Ferguson. When he started on his poker road, Madsen claimed fame at the 2006 World Series of Poker, by placing third in the Omaha Hi/Lo split event. Then only a short eleven days later, he went on to become the youngest World Series of Poker winner at that time, by going all in with J-7 in the No-Limit Hold ‘em event with his gutsy move beating out Paul Sheng. Then just six days later, Jeff again made history by winning a second World Series of Poker bracelet by taking out Erick Lindgren in heads-up play with a pair of Queens in the Short-Handed No-Limit Hold ‘em event. Madsen still holds the title of being the youngest players ever to win two World Series of Poker bracelets in the same Series.
Madsen continued cashing between 2007 and 2009 by playing the tournament circuit. Among his accomplishments during those two years was his 8th place finish in the $9,600 World Poker Tour Championship Event at Bay 101 Shooting Stars in San Jose in 2007. Then in 2009, he left the tables with more than $220K in the LA Poker Classic by winning the $1,500 No Limit Hold ‘em event and also finishing 3rd in the $9,900 HORSE Championship.
With an aggressive playing style that is often blamed on the arrogance of youth, Madsen is adamant that making four final tables in four different events, as well as earning two World Series of Poker bracelets, proves his player credibility and gives credit for his ability to read players.
