Chris Ferguson started with absolutely nothing but a Full Tilt Poker account. Then, by playing in Freerolls until he earned enough to move up to real money buy-in games, he continued to build his bankroll to thousands of dollars. How did he do it? By sticking to a plan and adopting a few key rules:
• Never buy into a cash game or a Sit & Go with more than 5 percent of your total bankroll (the only exception is for the lowest limits. You can buy into any game with a buy-in of $2.50 or less).
• Don't buy into a multi-table tournament for more than 2 percent of your total bankroll, but you can buy into any multi-table tournament that costs $1.
• If at any time during a No-Limit or Pot-Limit cash-game the money on the table represents more than 10 percent of your total bankroll, leave the game when the blinds reach you.
Chris stated that one great benefit from this approach to bankroll management is that it ensures you will always be playing in games you can afford. You'll never play for very long in a game that's over your head because, when you're losing, you'll have no choice but to drop down to a smaller game.
It took more than seven months of regular play until Chris got his bankroll stabilized at around $6.50. His big jump came on November 26th, 2006 when he took a $1 tournament buy-in and won $104 in prize money, finishing in second place out of 683 players. It took him over nine more months to reach his $10,000 mark. He then graciously donated his winnings to charity, the Save the Children Foundation. Chris has proven that if you plan ahead and play smart, you can survive any bad beat or lousy run of cards without being crippled.
Chris made it clear that the experiment was not about the money, but about showing players how they could start from nothing and move up to the big time games with proper bankroll management. He knew he could do it as he had previously turned $1 into $20,000 on Full Tilt Poker .
